While most corporations
are just beginning to consider what the concept of Career Ownership
means, the Port of Oakland is already on the move and has partnered
with Career Insiders to facilitate two workshops in their Career
Ownership Series. “We at the Port believe that Career Ownership
is crucial to the success of our employees and our organization,” says
Aileen Evans, Manager of Organizational Development. “The Port
is undergoing a number of changes that will open up opportunities
within the organization. There will be internal and external competition
for these opportunities, and we want our employees to be trained
in career management skills, in addition to their individual job
skills. We want them to be as prepared as possible for today’s
fast-changing work environment.”
As part of the third phase
of the Port’s Succession Planning
initiative, Evans has implemented a 4-part program, “Taking
Charge of Your Career in the 21st Century.” “We brought
in Career Insiders to deliver two workshops, How to Write a Winning
Resume and Ace the Interview, because many of our employees have
never received formal training in these areas or are in need of refresher
training. In these workshops, Mauri Schwartz provides valuable perspectives,
techniques and templates that our employees can apply to their own
situations. The feedback from each workshop has been very positive.
Our goal is to repeat the series until all Port employees have a
chance to take advantage of it.”
